Oh, so it's like that huh? They'll look the other was as long as you pay!

That will probably what they'll put in for next, people will have to pay for the chance to avoid prosecuton of smoking indoors!

Where were their concerns over the health of the wait saff that served this affair?

Can we say hypocrite yet? Besides that, I'm surprised they haven't linked prostate cance to evil tobacco! Sheesh, enough already health police!

The new law will allow smokers to gather at any facility for up to five days a year "where the public is invited for the primary purpose of promoting and sampling tobacco products."

1/1/03 - 1/5/03 Newport Cigarette Fesival

1/6/03 - 1/10/03 Salem Cigarette Festival

1/11/03 - 1/15/03 Native American Tobacco Reverance Festival

On and on... You get the idea.
;O)

Hmmmmm, ANY facility?? And just how many "facilities" are there in NYC? Let's see, 5 days at Brewster's Bar, then 5 days at Mulligan's, then 5 days at Vito's, then 5 days at...yep, that just might be the loophole we need. LOL

OR we could look at it this way. 5 days at Mulligan's by the Native American Tobacco Reverance Festival, the next 5 days by the Salem Cigarette Festival, the next 5 days by the Newport Cigarette Fesival...and while the Newport Festival is going on at Mulligan's, the Native American Festival begins at Barney's, etc. etc. etc.

the primary purpose of promoting and sampling tobacco products

So, let me get this right. The people who are addicted to tobacco get thrown out the door of all bars in the city.

But, the city allows groups to gather for the primary purpose of *promoting* tobacco products?

If Bloomberg's goal is to stop people from smoking in the first place (as he says it is), isn't the latter much worse than the former?

I think the bar and bodega owners didn't slip Hizzoner enough "campaign contributions" before the last election.

This should be a sign to the pro-tobacco people here that they won't permanently get rid of your favorite weed. The government depends too heavily on taxes from it to make people totally stop it.

If the government was the only behemoth in this War on Smokers, I'd believe the same thing, but they're not even the biggest and they sure as heck aren't the most powerful.
